In a cigarette holder comprising a body having a liquid reservoir 5, Fig. 3, inlet and outlet smoke conveying passages 16, 17, Fig. 5, respectively, a duct 25 connected to the inlet passage 16 which enters the liquid in the reservoir, and means, such as a thumb piece 12 and disc 19, for ejecting a cigarette, there is provided a valve means, for example a slide 11, for closing the passages 16, 17 simultaneously with the ejection of. the cigarette. The reservoir 5, Fig. 3, in the metal or plastic body contains a liquid, such as water, the upper part of the body incorporating a recess 6 in which is mounted an ejector and valve assembly 7, Fig. 5, that consists of a base member 8 with a longitudinal hole 10 in which is slidable the valve member 11 attached to the knurled thumb-piece 12. The outer end of member 11 embodies the perforated disc 19 whilst the base 8 incorporates a lateral opening 26 and the duct 25. With the thumb piece 12 located in the extreme rightward position shown in full lines a cigarette may be inserted into a receiver 3, Fig. 3, the smoke passing through the perforations in disc 19, Fig. 5, the passage 16, duct 25, the filtering liquid, opening 26, and passage 17 into the mounthpiece 4, Fig. 3. Upon moving the thumb piece 12 to the position shown in dotted lines the disc 19 ejects the cigarette and valve member 11 closes the opening 26 and upper end of the duct 25 so that liquid from the reservoir 5 cannot escape. The assembly 7 is held in place by a cap threaded around the receiver 3 and the base of the reservoir is made of such a width that the holder remains upright when placed on a flat surface.
