Abstract

A biologically active material is released in a controlled sustained manner from an implant which is introduced into the tissues of an animal body ballistically. The implant is ballistically-shaped and comprises a biologically compatible polymer body contg. a biologically active material which is separated from the exterior of the implant by a material which provides a means of providing the desired controlled sustained release of the biologically active material when the implant is exposed to the fluids and cells of the living animal body. Used for the sustained release of a variety of biologically active materials e.g. vaccines, bacterins, hormones, minerals, vitamins, antibiotics or other drugs, into the bodies of animals such as cattle. The implant can be placed in the body of an animal without actually handling the animals. This saves time and effort and can also in some cases protect a human from contracting a disease from infected animals.
