Abstract

Prodn. of lubricating oils with a VI of >=100 and a 210 degrees F viscosity (Paraffin feed contg. >65 wt % n-paraffins having a b.p. of 420 degrees C with an organic peroxide of formula ROOR1 (where R and R1 are alkyl, aryl or acyl) at high temp. The prod. is fractionated to isolate a fraction with an initial b.p. of >=380 degrees C (above the final b.p. of the feed) and a 210 degrees F viscosity of >=9.5 cS (>Then blended with a hydrocarbon oil having an initial b.p. of >=380 degrees C and a 210 degrees F viscosity of >=3.5 cS (V The process can be used to produce multigrade oils without the addn. of polymeric VI improvers. In an example, a blend of 63 wt % thiourea-extracted spindle oil and 37 wt % peroxidised n-hexadecane had a 210 degrees F viscosity of 20.1 cS, a 0 degree F viscosity of 14P and a VI of >200.
