Abstract

Lubricating oils with a VI of >=100 and a kinematic viscosity at 98.9 degrees C (Vextracting a light hydrocarbon oil (final b.p. 380 degrees C) with thiourea, (b) contacting the extract at high temp. with an organic peroxide of formula ROOR' (where R and R' are alkyl, aryl or acyl), (c) treating the product to isolate a fraction with an initial b.p. of >=380 degrees C and a kinematic viscosity at 98.9 degrees C of >=9.5 cS, this value being higher than Vhaving an initial b.p. of >=380 degrees C and a kinematic viscosity at 98.9 degrees C of >=3.5 cS, this value being lower than Voils (10W/30, 10W/40, 20W/40, or 20W/50) can be produced without the use of additional VI improvers.
