Abstract

A method for the determination of the degree to which a powdery material generates dust by friction between its grains when being poured and the degree to such dust remains suspended after being liberated into the surrounding atmosphere, especially applicable to the handling of artificial fertilisers. A known quantity of the material is placed in a drum (1) rotating about a horizontal axis at a known speed, and the degree of opacity of the air in the drum is measured during the rotation for a given time and for a predetermined time after the drum has ceased rotation. The drum may have internal blades (6) and be shaped as a pair of conical sections with their bases together at the centre. The degree of opacity is determined by optical means, which may consists of a beam (22) passing along the axis of the drum, the scatter from which on impingement on the back of the drum is measured by a circle of photodetectors arranged around the axis (16).
