Abstract

The original signal consists of mixed 8-bit data words and symbols of 7 bits plus a parity bit. To groups of three words are added two bits, which, together with some (specified) parity bits in any symbols present completely define that three word pattern. In the pref. scheme the additional bits define the general nature of the word pattern while the parity bits define details (e.g. O, 1 specifies a data word followed by a symbol; the parity bit then specifies the following word). The whole is intended to be divided into blocks of 5 bits, plus one, and transmitted as 5 blocks of 6 bits, plus two, as in 6902950.
