1326562 Digital transmission systems GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 10669/70 Heading H4P In a digital system where infrequently occurring errors in less significant digits are acceptable, an error check is made on the more significant digits, and any group of digits found to be in error is replaced by the previous (stored) group. The system may be used for television signals which are converted into nine bit groups, the digits being of reducing significance i.e. the first bit being the most significant and the ninth the least. A parity bit may be added to the first four bits but parity addition to the less significant five bits is not carried out. Ten digit groups are transmitted and stored on receipt and a check is made on the four more significant bits plus parity bit and if a check reveals no errors the original nine bit group less parity bit is passed to a decoder. If the check reveals an error the previous nine bit group is utilized in place of the present group.
