Abstract

La invención proporciona un método para reducir el contenido de sodio de un agua que contiene iones de sodio disuelto, en particular un agua con un contenido del ión de sodio de al menos 100 ppm. Ejemplos de las aguas son los efluentes, tales como el drenaje ácido de minas y las aguas fluviales. El método incluye los pasos de: (i) Remover los iones de magnesio, calcio y sodio del agua al poner en contacto el agua con una(s) resina(s) de intercambio catiónico a fin de capturar los iones de sodio, calcio y magnesio presentes allí; (ii) Tratar la(s) resina(s) de intercambio catiónico del paso (i) con ácido nítrico con el objetivo de producir un eluyente que contenga iones de sodio, iones de calcio, iones de magnesio, iones de nitrato y ácido nítrico; (iii) Agregar un carbonato al eluyente a fin de precipitar los iones de calcio y magnesio como carbonatos de calcio y de magnesio; (iv) Separar los carbonatos precipitados del eluyente; y (v) Tratar el eluyente del paso (iv) a fin de obtener un producto de nitrato de potasio y/o sodio.
