- 2매의 전극 부착 기판 사이에 액정층을 협지한 도트 매트릭스형의 액정 셀을, 광원측에 위치하는 제1 편광판 및 관찰측에 위치하는 제2 편광판 사이에 배치하고, 상기 제1 편광판과 상기 액정 셀 사이에 제1 위상차판을 배치하며, 상기 제2 편광판과 상기 액정 셀 사이에 제2 위상차판을 배치한 표시 소자이고, 각 화소의 액정 분자 배열이 화소에 전압을 인가하지 않은 상태에서 기판 주면에 대하여 거의 수직으로 배향한 원편광 주도형의 수직 배향 모드의 액정 표시 소자로서,상기 제1 편광판 및 상기 제1 위상차판을 포함하는 원편광자 구성체와,상기 액정 셀을 포함하는 가변 리타더 구성체와,상기 제2 편광판 및 상기 제2 위상차판을 포함하는 원검광자 구성체를,상기 광원, 상기 원편광자 구성체, 상기 가변 리타더 구성체, 상기 원검광자 구성체의 순서로 구성시킨 액정 표시 소자이고,상기 제1 위상차판 및 상기 제2 위상차판은 1축의 4분의 1 파장판이며,상기 제1 편광판과 상기 제1 위상차판 사이에, 굴절율 이방성이 nx>ny=nz로 되는 광학적으로 1축의 제3 위상차판을 그 지상축이 상기 제1 편광판의 투과축과 대략 평행하게 되도록 배치하고,또한, 상기 액정 셀과 상기 제1 위상차판 또는 상기 제2 위상차판 사이에, 굴절율 이방성이 nx=ny>nz로 되는 광학적으로 마이너스의 1축의 제4 위상차판을 배치한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 표시 소자.

- 제2항에 있어서,상기 제3 위상차판은 아톤 수지, 폴리비닐 알콜 수지, 제오노아 수지, 트리아세틸셀룰로스 수지 중 어느 한 수지로 형성된 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 표시 소자.
- 제2항에 있어서,상기 제4 위상차판은, 그 면 내 방향의 굴절율을 nxy(C), 법선 방향의 굴절 율을 nz(C), 두께를 d(C)로 하고, 상기 액정층의 액정 재료의 굴절율 이방성을 Δn(LC), 상기 액정층의 두께를 d(LC), 액정 표시 소자에의 입사광의 파장을 λ로 하였을 때,Δn(LC)×d(LC)≥{nxy(C)-nz(C)}×d(C)≥Δn(LC)×d(LC)-λ/2를 만족하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 표시 소자.
- 광원과,한쌍의 기판 사이에 액정층을 협지하고, 상기 액정층의 상기 기판 법선 방향의 굴절율이 상기 기판면 내 방향의 굴절율보다 큰 상태를 취하는 것이 가능한 복굴절 모드의 액정 셀을 포함하는 가변 리타더 구성체와,상기 광원과 상기 가변 리타더 구성체 사이에 배치되고, 제1 편광판과, 상기 제1 편광판과 상기 가변 리타더 구성체 사이에 배치된 제1 위상차판을 갖는 원편광자 구성체와,상기 가변 리타더 구성체에 대하여 상기 광원과는 대향하는 관찰면측에 배치되고, 제2 편광판과, 상기 가변 리타더 구성체와 상기 제2 편광판 사이에 배치된 제2 위상차판을 갖는 원검광자 구성체를 구비한 액정 표시 소자로서,상기 원편광자 구성체는, 상기 원편광자 구성체로부터의 출사광의 편광 상태가 출사 방위에 상관없이 대략 원편광으로 되도록 상기 제1 편광판에 기인하는 시각 특성을 보상하는 제1 보상 수단을 포함하고,상기 가변 리타더 구성체는, 상기 액정 셀의 위상차의 시각 특성을 보상하는 제2 보상 수단을 포함하고,상기 제1 보상 수단은 상기 제1 편광판과 상기 제1 위상차판 사이에 굴절율 이방성이 nx>ny=nz로 되는 광학적으로 1축의 제3 위상차판을 구비하고, 상기 제3 위상차판은 그 지상축이 상기 제1 편광판의 투과축과 대략 평행하게 되도록 배치하고,상기 제2 보상 수단은 상기 액정 셀과 상기 제1 위상차판 또는 상기 제2 위상차판 사이에 굴절율 이방성이 nx=ny>nz로 되는 광학적으로 마이너스의 1축의 제4 위상차판을 구비한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 표시 소자.
