Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily and inexpensively obtain the title high-purity powder useful as, e.g., a high-toughness material, a low-expansion material, etc., and wherein a first oxide is covered with a second metal oxide by burning a mixture of the powder of the first oxide constituting a composite oxide and the metal constituting the second oxide in a flame at a prescribed temp. CONSTITUTION:The fine powder of the first oxide constituting the desired composite oxide (e.g., Al2O3 powder having 10-20mu particle diameter and 99.8% purity) and the powder of the metal constituting the second oxide of the metal (e.g., metallic silicon powder having about 40mu particle diameter and 99.8% purity) are mixed, for example, in a 2/1 ratio to obtain the mixed powder 2. The mixed powder 2 is supplied from a hopper 1, passing through a pipe 3 by a carrier gas 12 (e.g., O2), then passed through a raw material supply part 10, and introduced into a reaction vessel 15. Meanwhile, a combustible gas 13 is introduced into the vessel 15 through a pipe 4, and a burner 8 is ignited to form a flame 9. The metallic powder is burned and oxidized in the flame 9 at a temp. lower than the m.p. of the first oxide to cover the first oxide with the formed metal oxide, and the composite oxide powder is collected through a block and a dust collector 6.
