Abstract

PURPOSE:To release the residual stress at the time of grinding to improve the precision of the gap depth by aging the rear face and the floating face of a head block after grinding them. CONSTITUTION:A substrate on which many thin film magnetic heads are formed is cut to a head block 1, and its floating face 1a is adhered to a jig 3 and a rear face 1b is ground, and the block 1 is peeled from the jig 3. Next, the face 1b is adhered to the jig 3 and the face 1a is ground. It is preferable that an extent e2 of working of the face 1a is equal to that of the face 1b. The block 1 is heated at a temperature higher than the fusion temperature of an adhesive 2 and is aged. Since deformations delta1 and delta2 of faces 1b and 1a at the time of working have the same extent and opposite directions, deformation is corrected to about zero by aging. Thereafter, the face is polished to be parallel with the head array line.
