Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable an ink drop to be stably discharged by refreshing ink in a nozzle, by a method wherein an inlet port of an air pump is connected to a cap, and ink is sucked from a top of the nozzle during capping when required. CONSTITUTION:When a carriage 22 is moved to a stand-by position 21, a cap covers an ink drop discharge port 4 of a head housing 1 by operation of a solenoid or the like, and a small chamber 8 is formed by a seal rubber 10. For instance, when printing is started, current is at first applied to a three port solenoid valve 16, an exhaust path of an air pump 13 is opened to the air, and an air inflow path of the head housing 1 is closed. Then, current is applied to the air pump 13, and air is sucked from an air outflow port 9. Ink is sucked out from a top nozzle of a head 2 and the ink made viscous and bubbles are exhausted. Though ink penetrates into a suction tube 18, it is trapped in an ink fountain 11. After suction for a fixed time, current application to the solenoid valve 16 is cut off, and the cap 7 is separated from the head housing 1 by reverse operation of the solenoid or the like.
