Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform the fast and accurate positioning jobs of a fingerprint image by scanning the binarized image of a fingerprint in two vertical directions to detect a position where the maximum number of crossing swelled lines in each vertical direction and deciding the coordinates of said detected position as the center position of the fingerprint. CONSTITUTION:A fingerprint image is read by a picture input part 21 and binarized by a binarizing circuit 22. Then a binarized image 1 of the fingerprint is scanned by a scanning circuit 23 in both X and Y directions at each prescribed interval. A crossing swelled line number calculating circuit 24 detects the number of crossing swelled lines in response to the coordinates and then obtains the frequency distributions of the crossing swelled lines in X and Y directions to store them into a crossing swelled line number register 27. While in case of a spiral fingerprint image, a crossing swelled line number distribution curve 3 is maximized at about the center of the spiral. Furthermore the curvature of the crossing swelled line number is compared with the prescribed threshold value in case the swelled lines 2 flow in parallel with each other. Then a deciding circuit 31 decides a spiral pattern if said curvature is larger than the prescribed threshold value; while a flowing pattern is decided vice versa. Then the processes and calculations are carried out by a scanning direction designating circuit 26, an extreme value register 29, a curvature calculating circuit 30, etc.
