Abstract
PURPOSE:To ensure the accurate positioning jobs of fingerprint images over a wide range by detecting a square containing an end point from the contour of a ridge line detected through tracking of the changing point of the picture element of a fingerprint image obtaining both directions of the crack and the ridge line through a simple arithmetic operation, and performing the collation of fingerprints based on said crack and line directions. CONSTITUTION:A fingerprint image supplied from a picture input part 21 is turned into a binarized image 1 by a binarizing circuit 22. The image 1 is divided into the grid-shaped squares 2 and supplied to a contour extracting circuit 25. Then each square 2 is scanned for detection of the changing points 3 of the picture element value and the contours 8 of the ridge lines 7. Then the picture elements of the contours 8 detected by an end point detecting circuit 23 are selected equidistantly and these picture elements are connected to each other for production of two vectors. The inner lines of these vectors are calculated for detection of all end points. An independent point erasing circuit 24 paints out the squares 2 containing end points and stores these squares. Furthermore a directional distribution calculation circuit 26 calculates the directional vector of the line 7 in case an area 5 including cracks is not detected. Then a positioning circuit 29 and a deciding circuit 27 work to perform each processing.
