Abstract
PURPOSE:To form complete integral structure and to obtain high reliability by combining an optical waveguide with a diffraction grating. CONSTITUTION:A slab type optical waveguide area 2 is formed on an optical waveguide substrate 1, its end part is a convex end surface 3, and a flexible flat plate type replica diffraction grating 5 is fitted along the shape of the convex end surface 3. Light which enters the slab optical waveguide area 2 reaches its end surface through the area 2, but the light is reflected and diffracted by the flat plate type replica diffraction grating 5 and demultiplexed by wavelengths when the incident light has the plural wavelengths. Further, when light beams with different wavelengths is made incident at different angles, they are multiplexed when reflected by the diffraction grating. Here, the flexible flat plate type replica diffraction grating can be mass-produced and high in accuracy. Consequently, the inexpensive multiplexer/demultiplexer with high reliability is obtained.
