Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the abrasion resistance and the impact resistance of the seal in the caption by constituting the backing of an apex seal with silicon nitride sintered material and the sliding part with silicon nitride sintered material reinforced with silicon carbide fiber, in a rotary piston engine. CONSTITUTION:An apex seal 1 is obtained through the process that the first compressed molding body 2a of silicon nitride constituting the backing 2 of the apex seal 1 and the second compressed molding body 3a of silicon nitride containing silicon carbide fiber constituting a sliding part 3 are layered within a die 10 made of graphite and but in the regular cource of manufacture by sintering the material in a consolidated form under the condition of being pressurized by means of a pressurizing press 11 in its sliding direction. The apex seal 1, manufactured by this method, is raised in abrasion resistance and rupture strength of the sliding part 3 and consolidated firmly as a whole, so that the strength and the impact resistance can be improved.
