Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide the titled element which has small absorptivity in a visible region and has a high nonlinear optical effect by incorporating a nonlinear optical medium consisting of a crystal material composed of specific hydroxynitropyridine into said element. CONSTITUTION:This element is constituted of the crystal having the hydroxynitropyridine expressed by the formula as its compsn. The substd. position of the nitro group and hydroxyl group in the formula may be any of ortho, meta and para; above all, 2-hydroxy-3-nitropyridine, 2-hydroxy-5-nitropyridine are preferred. This crystal has the electron donative hydroxyl group and the electron attracting nitro group and since the electron transfer in the molecules in the excited state progresses smoothly, the crystal has a large nonlinear optical constant beta. The nonlinear optical element having the large nonlinear optical effect is thereby obtd. In addition, the element which has no max. absorption in a visible light region is obtd.
