Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a low energy consumption display using a liquid crystal material comprising a specific cyclohexyl-cyclohexane compound capable of exciting a fluorescent compound in high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: A display cell containing a liquid crystal material mainly composed of a cyclohexyl-cyclohexane of formula (A is 3W8C straight chain alkyl; B is CN).
EFFECT: A mixed liquid crystal composed of the compounds of formula wherein R is C3H7, C5H11and C7H13 has strong light absorption at wave lengths shorter than about 200 nm, and scarcely absorbs near-UV light. Such characteristics are favorable as a solvent of fluorescent material. On the contrary, the widely used MBBA liquid crystals have strong absorption at wave length longer than about 350 nm, and do not excite fluorescent molecules effectively.
