Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled lightweight fiber made up of special porous core and dense skin, outstanding in heat retentivity and strength, suitable for synthetic cotton, woven and nonwoven fabrics and construction materials, by melt forming of a thermoplastic polymer followed by drawing under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:First, a thermoplastic polymer (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate) is brought to melts pinning, while quenching at a draft ratio of <=1,500, so that the resulting crystallinity is <=20%. Thence, the resultant spun yarn is drawn at a deformation rate of >=2X10<3>%/min and draw ratio of 1.1-50 under an atmosphere at temperatures lower than the melting point of said polymer by >=10 deg.C, thus obtaining the objective fiber of a porosity >=45% having fine pores oriented in the direction of fiber axis, made up of (A) porous core containing such a group of fine pores that an average diameter D on the fiber section is 0.01-50mu and ratio of the average length in the direction of fiber axis L to D: L/D 2-100 and (B) dense non-porous layer (skin).
