Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable display with a high contrast when an electric field is impressed and to relieve the unequal colors when the electric field is not impressed so that a display grade and the yield of process are improved by incorporating a dye having a spectral characteristic to form the complementary color of the color when the electric field is absent into a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:Any of the liquid crystal, oriented film or filter is so functioned as to have the spectral characteristic to have the relation of the complementary color of the color when the electric field is absent. An increase in the transmittivity on a short wavelength side and long wavelength side is, therefore, obviated when the electric field is impressed B. The display which appears blacker than the conventional purple display is obtd. and the contrast is increased. The short wavelength and long wavelength sides are controlled by the spectral characteristic of the dye when the electric field is absent A. The colors of the long wavelength and short wavelength which appear slight thicker and thinner than the prescribed gap are thereby relieved and the display grade and the yield of the process are improved.
