Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the unique coloring effect to be obtained by interposing a phase difference plate between two sheets of black and white polarizing plates with a deviation of about 45 deg. between the light absorption axis of the polarizing plates and the extension axis of the color phase difference plate. CONSTITUTION:Iodine polarizing plates 11, 14 whose extension directions are vertical and which have light absorption axis in the extension directions are disposed before and behind a liquid crystal cell 12 comprising twisting 90 deg. the nematic liquid crystal of positive dielectric anisotropy. A color phase difference plate 13 which is obtained by adding dyes to a linear high polymer film such as polyvinyl alcohol film and uniaxially orienting the same is provided between the polarizing plate 14 and liquid crystal cell 12 in such a manner that its extension direction and the light absorption axis of the polarizing plate assume an angle of about 45 deg.. All colors including single colors such as yellow, orange, etc. and mixed colors may be utilized for the colors of the phase difference plate 13. Provision of a reflecting plate on the outer side of the polarizing plate 14 is equally well. Changing of the interference colors owing to phase differences through ON and OFF of the liquid crystal cell in complementary color relations in this way and the combination of the absorption colors of dyes yield the unique coloring effect.
