Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent buildup of carbon sludge or emission of detrimental component in the exhaust gas from an engine whose number of working cylinders is controlled, by performing stop of valve operation and its restitution at a certain specific phase of engine rotation from the exhaust valve.
CONSTITUTION: The resting run of cylinder 2 is performed by allowing the control device 22 to give a command to No.1 oil pressure change-over device 34 in synchronization with the ignition signal for another cylinder 4 to emit the oil pressure of the valve operation stop mechanism 24, 28 and to stop injection in synchronization with the ignition signal for the cylinder 2. When afterward a cam lift is generated and the exhaust valve opening approaches its maximum, the mechanism 28 finishes the stop of operation immediately after completion of the cam lift with the exhaust valve and the suction valve begins to open just before it and when it approaches the maximum the mechanism 24 is actuated and stops operation immediately after completion of the cam lift of the suction valve. Because the restitution is made in the same manner, only air is encapsulated in the case of the resting of cylinder, and the air is first released at the time of restitution, so that the subsequent processes are made smoothly.
