Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the flash butt weldability of an Al alloy by adding a prescribed percentage of Zn, Mg, Cu and one or more among Mn, Cr, Zr and Ti to the alloy and regulating the ratio between the grain size in the extrudion direction and that in a direction perpendicular to the extrusion direction to a prescribed value.
CONSTITUTION: When an Al alloy contg. 3W8% Zn, 0.3W2.5% Mg, 0.1W0.6% Cu and one or more among 0.05W0.6% Mn, 0.05W0.3% Cr. 0.05W0.25% Zr and 0.001W 0.1% Ti is extruded, the ratio between the grain size in the extrusion direction and that in a direction perpendicular to the extrusion direction is regulated to ≥5 to obtain the titled extruded Al alloy. The flash butt weld zone of the extruded Al alloy is almost equal to the base metal in mechanical properties, and the alloy is suitable for use as a material for a rim.
