Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve coding with good efficiency, by suitably determining the order of coding of scanning lines of intermediate tone and non-intermediate tone regions and the number of scanning lines, in a coding of video data of multi-value obtained through sampling. CONSTITUTION:Based on the video data, the entire region of the picture is divided into an intermediate region A and a non-intermediate region B. The video data of the region A is applied with the multi-value coding method and the two-dimension coding method is applied to the region B principally. If the entire coded line number m and the intermediate tone coded line number n are different as m>n in the two dimension coding method of the region B, the coding of the non-intermediate tone is executed by m-line and the intermediate coding of n-line is made. Next, in the case of m>=2n only, the intermediate tone coding is succeedingly done, and if not, non-intermediate coding is made. Thus the video data can be compressed efficiently.
