Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid the white-dropout (nondisplay) phenomenon which is caused when a simultaneous lighting is given to an overlap part of the upper and lower display layers for a liquid crystal display device consisting of the upper and lower twist nematic liquid crystal display layers, by setting a selective polarizing layer between the upper and lower display layers. CONSTITUTION:A double-layer liquid crystal display device consists of an upper liquid crystal cell 2 made of an electrode substrate 7 holding a liquid crystal material 8 between and a lower liquid crystal cell 3 comprising electrode substrate 12 holding a liquid crystal material 13. Then a selective polarizing layer 4 is set between the cells 2 and 3. In other words, the layer 4 contains a polarizing region 18 at the areas corresponding to analog display parts 10 and 15 plus a nonpolarizing region 19 at the areas corresponding to digital display parts 11 and 16 respectively at the display parts of the cells 2 and 3. Thus the digital display part is displayed bright; while the analog display part is rather dark. However, no white-dropout phenomenon is caused to ensure a high-contrast display with the cells 2 and 3.
