Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a phenomenon of formation of films on the wall or a like area of a polymerization vessel, by using a sulfonate group-added olefin polymer as a protective colloid in the production of the title polymer by a reversed phase suspension polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: A bead polymer is produced by subjecting an aqueous solution of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g., methacrylic acid or acrylamide, to a reversed phase suspension polymerization using a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator in an unpolymerizable, hydrophobic liquid, e.g., hexane. In this polymerization, a phenonmenon of formation of films on the wall or a like area of a polymerization vessel is prevented by using, as a protective colloid, a product obtained by adding 0.5W2, per polymer molecule, sulfonic acid groups to an olefin polymer, MW750W5,000, having olefinic unsaturated bonds in the molecule, e.g., polybutadiene or butadiene/ethylene copolymer.
