Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a bead polymer without causing the adhesion of polymer particles and forming a film on the wall of a polymerizer, by subjecting an aqueous solution of an unsaturated monomer to reversed phase suspension polymerization in a hydrophobic liquid using a reaction product of a specific α-olefin and an unsaturated polyfunctional carboxylic acid as a protective colloid.
CONSTITUTION: In reversed phase suspension polymerization wherein an aqueous solution of an ethylenic unsaturated monomer (e.g., acrylic acid, etc.) is dispersed in a hydrophobic liquid (e.g., n-hexane, etc.) having polymerization inactivity and subjected to suspension polymerization using a wate-soluble radical polymerization initiator (e.g., potassium persulfate, etc.), a reaction product obtained by reacting approximately equimolar amounts of 16W60C α-olefin and α, β-unsaturated polyfunctional carboxylic acid or its anhydride (e.g., maleic anhydride, etc.) or a formed product obtained by hydrogenating this reaction product as a protective colloid is added to the hydrophobic liquid of dispersion medium subjected to suspension polymerization, to give the desired bead polymer.
