Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a unidirectional traveling light beam with simple constitution by arranging a Brewster plate, a Faraday rotator, a linear polarizing plate, and a faraday rotator in the optical path of a bidirectional traveling light beam. CONSTITUTION:A forward traveling light beam Wt having a plane of polarization in parallel to the paper surface is transmitted through a Brewster plate 23 at a Brewster angle thetaB and its plane of polarization is rotated by theta through a Faraday rotator 21. Since a linear polarizing plate 24 has its maximum transmission direction set at the angle theta to the X axis, the light Wt having a rotation angle theta of the plane of polarization is transmitted through the linear polarizing plate 24 as it is, and its plane of polarization is rotated by - theta through a Faraday rotator 22, so that it is emitted in its original state. A backward traveling light beam Wb having a plane of polarization in parallel to the paper surface, on the other hand, is made incident to the Faraday rotator 22 to rotate the plane of polarization by - theta, and the linear polarizing plate 24 transmits a component cos2theta; and the Farady rotator 21 rotates the plane of polarization by - theta, and the Brewster plate 23 reflects a vertical polarized wave component. thus, the unidirectional traveling light beam is obtained with the simple constitution.
