Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce gap corrosion remarkably, in using a stainless steel in an aqueous solution containing a minute amount of chloride ion, by adjusting a pH of the aqueous solution to a pH dissolving corrosion products.
CONSTITUTION: In using a stainless steel in contact with a solution containing dissolved oxygen as an oxidizing agent and chloride ion, a pH of the solution is adjusted so as to be laid in a range between 3.5 and an passivated coating breakdown pH of the stainless steel. For example, hydrochloric acid is added to an aqueous solution in a pH adjusting tank 2 to adjust the pH thereof to 3.0 and, thereafter, said aqueous solution is heated to a temp. of 80°C in a heating tank 8. After heating, warm water is supplied to a plate type heat exchanger 4 from a warm water inlet 6 by a pump 3 and a cooling medium sent from a cooling medium inlet 7 is heated through a heat conductive plate 5. As the result, in the investigation performed after three months, gap corrosion is not recognized in gap parts between each plates.
