Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the yield and quality of case steel by discriminating the passage of slag in a molten-metal passage, by detecting the difference in electric conductivity between moltem metal and the slag as variations in impedance.
CONSTITUTION: A long nozzle 3 is provided between a ladle 1 and a tundish 2, and a detecting coil 4 is arranged close to it. The detection signal of the coil 4 is measured by an impedance measuring instrument 5, which outputs an impedance variation signal (a). This signal (a) is applied to a band-pass filter 6 to extract a variation signal in a specific frequency range, and it is converted into a DC signal C by a converter 7. Then, a level comparator 8 compares the signal C with a reference value and, when the signal exceeds the reference vaue, generates a slag outflow detection signal. Thus, the start of flag outflow is discriminated.
