For example, an auxiliary cylinder 9 sealed therein with a gas under high pressure although its capacity is small is prepared other than a gas cylinder 6 for supplying a cooling gas to a Joule Thomson cooler 5 for cooling an infrared ray detector 2 placed at the focus of a tracking optical system 1. At the start of operation, quick cooling is accomplished by using the auxiliary cylinder. In this case, the back flow to the cylinder 6 is inhibited by the effect of a check valve 12. When the pressure of the auxiliary cylinder drops and a steady state is attained, the gas of the cylinder 6 is used. Thereby, the wasteful consumption of the gas is prevented and the rise time is shortened.
