Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a guest host liquid crystal element of a bright display surface and large display contrast by grasping a nematic liquid crystal between transparent electrodes and disposing a reflection plate and a polarizing plate of the single substance transmittance kept within a speciic range. CONSTITUTION:Patterned EC electrodes 23, 29 are provided on glass substrates 22, 30 of the front and rear and further inclined orientation layers 24, 28 are formed, thence a sealing material 27 is disposed. A polarizing plate 31 of good single substance transmittance and a reflection plate 32 are disposed on the rear surface side of the display element injected with a mixture of a nematic liquid crystal 25 havng negative dielectric anisotropy and a dichromatic dye 26 and both EC electrodes 23, 29 are connected to an electric power source 33. The single substance transmittance of said plate 31 is kept at 50-75%. If this single substance transmittance is below 50%, the contrast improves sharply, but the brightness of the display surface decreases and this is therefore undesirable. Conversely, if it exceeds 75%, the contrast lowers and this is therefore undesirable.
