Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically produce an engine body with improved toughness and workability by using a material prepared by adding a metal to a ceramic.
CONSTITUTION: Water is added to a mixed powder of a ceramic such as Al2O3 and a metal such as Cr and the resulting mixture is stirred. Then, a small amount of PVA, dextrin or the like is added as a protective colloide or a binder if required, and a small amount of ammonium alginate or the like is added as a deflocculating agent or a dehydrating agent. The thus obtained mixture is spray-dried and is globulated to enhance fluid property. The thus globulated material is molded under direct pressure by a powder molding machine having the mold shown, and then a plurality of molded bodies are sintered simultaneously at a temperature of about 1,000W1,300°C in a predetermined atmosphere such as a vacuum, to obtain cylinders 1a or pistons.
