Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an activated carbon molding having high formability and high resistance to contained water by kneading powdered activated carbon, a water soluble org. binder and thermosetting resin or an aqueous soln. of the resin with water after which the kneaded material is molded into the desired form and hardened by heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: The water soluble org. binder includes starch, methylcellulose or polyvinyl alcohol, and the thermosetting resin is not limited to imide type one. For example, to 1kg activated carbon 200mesh is added 100g methylcellulose, and 500g water soluble varnish contg. 40% water soluble imide type resin and 950g water are added. They are kneaded well, filled into a honeycomb forming mold, and extrusion-molded. The molding is then dried at 60°C for 8hr, heated to 120°C at 12°C/hr heating rate, held for 5hr, and finally heated at 270°C for 2hr in a nitrogen atmosphere atmosphere. Thus, a well heat hardened activated carbon honeycomb is obtd.
