Abstract

PURPOSE:Two or more kinds of silica gel-forming solutions or the solutions additionally containing other element compounds are successively hydrolyzed to form gels, thus producing the multilayer gel structure in which each layer well fuses with adjacent other layers and shows high adhesion. CONSTITUTION:A silica gel-forming solution such as a mixture of Si(OCH3)4, methanol and water, is charged in a box-shaped glass vessel to a certain level and made to gel at room temperature to form the fourth layer 25. Then, anothe gel- forming solution, e.g., the same solution as the above except for containing Ge(OCH3)4, is charged on the layer 25 and made to gel to form the third layer 24. In the same manner, the same solutions as the above except the content of Ge(OCH3)4 is changed is made to gel on the layer 24 to form the second layer 23 and the first layer 22 in succession. Further, the remaining substances on gelation is evaporated off from the multilayer gel structure to dry the silica gel, whereby the objective multilayer gel structure is produced.
