Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a base material for an optical fiber, capable of readily controlling the refractive index, and mass-producible, by hydrolyzing Si(OCH3)4 or Si(OC2H5)4, gelatinizing the hydrolyzate, drying the gelatinized hydrolyzate, immersing the resultant porous material in a dopant for controlling the refractive index, and sintering the material thus obtained. CONSTITUTION:A mixture solution 2 containing a raw material Si(OCH3)4 or Si(OC2H5)4 is introduced into a quartz glass container 1, hydrolyzed, heat-treated in a reaction kiln 4 and gelatinized. the gelatinized material is then dried by heating to 150-800 deg.C at a heating rate of about 1 deg.C/sec while passing Ar gas through the kiln 4 to form a porous material 3. The resultant material 3 is then immersed in a dopant solution 6, e.g. 50% phosphoric acid solution, for controlling the refractive index and then in pure water 7 by adjusting the immersion time to cause the concentration distribution from the periphery to the center thereof. The material 3 after the immersion treatment is introduced into the reaction kiln 4 and heated while passing Ar gas therethrough at a heating rate of about 1 deg.C/sec to remove the OH groups and CH3 groups. The dried material 3 is then heated in a sintering electric furnace 9 to give a transparent glassy material 8 (base material for an optical fiber).
