Abstract

PURPOSE:To make an optical waveguide multilayered, by forming impurities, which increase the refractive index of glass, to a desired shape like a layer on a glass substrate and accumulating fine glass particles on this layer and diffusing said impurities into accumulated glass and making this glass transparent. CONSTITUTION:Impurities 2 such as Ti and Sb which increase the refractive index of glass are vapor-deposited on a quartz glass substrate 1 and are formed to a shape like a waveguide by a minute lithography technique. SiO2 porous fine glass particles 3 are accumulated on these impurities and are heated at a high temperature to diffuse impurities 2 into the porous glass, and thus, a waveguide is produced. This waveguide is heated at a higher temperature to make the SiO2 porous glass transparent, thus producing an optical waveguide.
