Abstract

PURPOSE:To make a device small-sized, and to reduce its cost, by switching a plane of polarization of a laser light emitted from a single light source by use of a lambda/2 plate, and using the light source in common by a write optical system and a read optical system. CONSTITUTION:A laser light from a laser light source 1 is optically modulated 5 by an input signal 6 through a mirror 2, a polarizer 3 and a lens 4, and intensity of the light is varied. A lambda/2 plate 8 is detached from an optical path, and the light is magnetically recorded in an optical magnetic disk memory 16 by a write optical system 10 consisting of a prism 9, a mirror 11, a prism 12, etc. Subsequently, when reading, the lambda/2 plate 8 is placed in the laser optical path, S polarization is set, the light is reflected by the polarization prism 9, is led to a read optical system 10', the light reflected by the memory 16 rotates the plane of polarization by a Kerr effect, and reaches half-mirrors 27, 30.
