Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect a required signal efficiently with high precision and to obtain an inexpensive, small-sized device by guiding the reflected light of light, condensed on a recording medium, to a four-split photodetecting element via a detection prism which has a reflective surface with a critical angle to the optical axis. CONSTITUTION:Light from a laser light source 51 is converged on a disk 57 with information tracks by way of lenses 52 and 53, a polarizing prism 54, a quarter- wavelength plate, and an objective lens 56. Its reflected light travels backward to pass through the poralizing prism 54, and then is made incident to a four-split photodetector 60, arranged in the far field of the information track, via a detection prism 58 having a reflective surface 59 set nearly at a critical angle to the optical axis of the reflected light. Its output is processed adequately to obtain an information signal and a tracking error signal at the same time. Consequently, a desired signal is detected effectively with high precision and an inexpensive, small-sized device is realized.
