Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent an optical fiber core from the increment of loss due to micro-pending by coating the fiber with a metallic layer through a glass layer or directly so that the coefficient of thermal expansion of the glass layer applied to the inside of the metallic layer satisfies prescribed conditions. CONSTITUTION:A fiber 10 is coated with a metallic layer through a glass layer 16 or directly so that the coefficient of heat expansion of the glass layer 16 or a clad layer 14 applied to the inside of the metallic layer 18 is equal to that of the metallic layer 18 in its outermost part and is gradually reduced in the inside. Although the thick metallic layer 18 is applied to give heat resistance and large mechanical strength, the difference of the coefficient of thermal expansion between the metallic layer 18 and the inside glass layer 16 is not sharply increased, preventing the optical fiber from the increment of loss due to micro-pending even if the fiber is used at a high temperature.
