Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled stable composition capable of giving a dried film having improved water resistance, mechanical properties, etc. economically, by radically polymerizing a monomer in the presence of a cationic self-emulsifiable polyurethane emulsion having long chain alkyl groups.
CONSTITUTION: A urethane prepolymer having terminal isocyanate groups is reacted with an excess amount of a polyalkylenepolyamine, e.g. diethylenetriamine, to give a polyurethane-urea-polyamine (UUA). The free amino groups in the UUA are then partially reacted with a compound selected from the group consisting of a 12W 22C alkyl isocyanate, e.g. octadecyl isocyanate, and a 12W22C α-olefinic epoxide to introduce the long chain alkyl groups into the molecule of the UUA. A monomer, e.g. styrene, is polymerized in the presence of an emulsion prepared by mixing the resultant UUA within an aqueous solution of an acid, e.g. glycollic acid, to give the aimed composition.
