Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer having a low content of low-molecular- weight part, forming a molded article having improved gloss and appearance, causing no cracking, by subjecting a monomer mixture comprising 2,6-dimethylphenol as a main component, a small amount of a cresol, etc. to oxidative polymerization through dehydration.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture comprising 2,6-dimethylphenol as a main component, ≤0.1wt% m-cresol, (A) ≤0.25wt% o-cresol, and (B) ≤0.15wt% p-cresol and/or 2,4,6-trimethylphenol in a weight ratio of component A/component B of 0.5W25 is subjected to continuous oxidative polymerization in the presence of a catalyst (e.g., manganese acetate-diethanolamine, etc) while an oxygen-containing gas is being fed, to give the titled polymer having [η] in a CHCl3 solution at 30°C of 0.50W0.75, a molecular weight calculated in terms of polystyrene of ≤10,000, and ≤8wt% elution part content.
