Abstract
PURPOSE:To prepare an optical element, consisting of a fluoride glass, and usable in the infrared region, by fluorinating an optical element consisting of an oxide glass in an atmosphere of F2, HF, NH4F or NH4F.HF. CONSTITUTION:An optical element, e.g. optical electric wave modulator or filter, constituted of an oxide glass, e.g. ZrO2-BaO-Gd2O3-B2O3-SiO2, is fluorinated in an atmosphere of F2, HF, NH4F or NH4F.HF acceleratedly, and if necessarary the fluoride part is molten by heating at about 600 deg.C to give an infrared optical element usable even at a wavelength in the infrared region of about 2- 6mum. The optical element consisting of the oxide glass is partially masked and fluorinated by the method described above to afford an optical element having an optical waveguide path distinguished by the fluoride glass and the oxide glass.
