Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate refractive index fluctuation like the growth rings of a tree in a parent material of glass and to obtain a quart type rod lens having improved characteristics, by heating the parent material at high temperature and simultaneously applying ultrasonic wave to it before the parent material is drawn. CONSTITUTION:The parent material 1 of glass of the quartz type is put in a carbon heating element stored in the furnace container 28. The ultrasonic vibrator 23 is connected through the supporting bar 21 and the insulating part 22 to the top of the parent material 1. First, electricity is applied to the carbon heating element 29 so that the parent material 1 is heated partially at about 2,000 deg.C, and simultaneously the ultrasonic vibrator 23 is driven so that ultrasonic wave is applied to the heated part 31. By this process, ultrasonic wave is absorbed effectively in the heated part 31 softened by the high temperature, so that refractive index fluctuation like layer or the growth rings of a tree in the inside of the parent material 1 of glass is reduced.
