Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the machinability of sintered iron using no special means when sintering, by diffusing copper phase and lead phase into the crystal boundary of iron grains in the base material and by inhibiting the alloying of carbon from an atmosphere with the iron base metal.
CONSTITUTION: 0.2W3wt% lead and 0.5W5wt% copper in the form of free powder particles or alloy powder particles are mixed with iron powder to be molded and then the molded item is sintered in a non oxidizing atmosphere. Further, to the mixture, MnS powder and CaS powder may be added. It is best to carry out the sintering at a temperature which is sufficient to result in no chipping when the molded item is machined thereafter and at which the carbon component is hardly alloyed with the iron base metal. Lead and copper improve the machinability of the sintered body. Lead is alloyed with a part or the entire of copper to diffuse rapidly into gaps between iron grains and into the boundary of iron grains and to cover iron grains with the newly formed alloy, thereby inhibiting the alloying of caron with the iron grains. For attaining such effects, each content of lead and copper need exceed the above-mentioned each lower limit, respectively, but, on the other hand, when the content exceeds the upper limit corresponding to it, lead obstructs bonding between iron grains and is apt to result in the formation of defects in machining of the sintered body, while copper is excessively alloyed with iron so that the hardness of iron base metal is raised and the machinability of the sintered body is deteriorated.
