Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain good quality product pitch with reduced impurities suitable as a raw material for preparing carbon fiber or the like, by a method wherein a heavy mineral oil is thermally decomposed along with a recirculated mineral oil and steam and the obtained heavy oil is subjected to a two-stage separating operation.
CONSTITUTION: A raw heavy mineral oil 11 and a recirculated mineral oil 24 are introduced into a mixer 1 to be mixed therein and the resulting mixture is introduced into a heater 3 while steam 12 is added to said mixture to be heated to 400W580°C along with the steam and the heated mixture is subjected to pyrolysis in a reactor 4 at 370W470°C for 0.2W0.6hr. A light oil and a gas 16 produced therein are separated and the residual heavey mineral oil is introduced into a first separator 7 to separate decomposed heavy mineral oil in an amount 5W20wt. times as much as that of the row heavy oil and this separated oil is mixed with the raw heavy oil 11 as the recirculated heavy mineral oil. The residual decomposed heavy oil 20 is introduced into a second separator 9 to be separated into a product pictch 21 and a mixture 22 of the decompoed heavy oil and a coked substance.
