Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a useful fuel gas and light oil, by decomposing an oil sand bitumen in the presence of iron hydroxide as a catalyst at a relatively low thermal decomposition temperature efficiently under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. Oil sand bitumen is mixed with 1.5pts.wt. or more, preferably 3W10pts.wt., iron hydroxide in the form of powder, and dispersed fully with stirring. The dispersion thus obtained is then heated to 400W500°C at a heating rate of 50W500°C/min. No change in amount of the farmed final coke product is observed, and the yields of the fuel gas and light oil are increased at a relatively low temperature compared with the absence of the catalyst.
