Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare anthraquinone useful as a synthetic intermediate of dyes, etc., in high yield, by using diphenylmethane as the starting material, and oxidizing with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst containing vanadium oxide.
CONSTITUTION: Anthraquinone is prepared by oxidizing a diphenylmethane compound of formula (R is 1W3C alkyl)(e.g. 2,4-dimethyl-diphenylmethane) with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst containing vanadium oxide such as vanadium pentoxide. The diphenylmethane compound of formula can be obtained by reacting an alkylbenzene with benzyl chloride which is produced and supplied in a large quantity as an industrial raw material.
