Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture 3-phenyl-1-propanols in a superior yield by electrolyzing a mixed soln. consisting of styrene, aldehyde and water in the presence of a suitable supporting electrolyte under specified conditions using a graphite cathode.
CONSTITUTION: To a mixed soln. consisting of styrene, aldehyde represented by a general formula RCHO (where R is H or 1W3C alkyl) and water is added the quat. ammonium salt of sulfonic acid or perchloric acid at 0.1W5N concn. as a supporting electrolyte. The resulting electrolytic soln. is electrolyzed at 6W10pH and 0W70°C in an electrolytic cell provided with no diaphragm. A carbon electrode, especially a graphite electrode is used as the cathode, and the anode is made of C, Pt, Ag or the like with corrosion resistance to the electrolytic soln. and superior electric conductivity. Thus, 3-phenyl-1-propanols are manufactured in a high yield.
