Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable a higher dot density without changing the size of a character by performing interpolation on the entire character in two or more out of eight directions centered on one dot in an original character pattern. CONSTITUTION:When a pattern generated from an original character pattern generator 2 is increased in the dot density, it is transmitted to a dot density expanding device 4. An interpolation of the entire character is made in two or more out of eight directions in total centered on one dot in an original character pattern read from the original character pattern generator and then, transmitted to an expanded pattern memory 5. When the number of printing elements of a print head is shoft of the number of matrixes to be printed, after a pattern division with a printing pattern divider 6, a printing section 8 performs a printing according to the pattern stored in a scanning pattern memory 7. This method does not require the memory of enlarged patterns to have capacity enough to cover all characters corresponding to any original character pattern thereby enabling the economization of a scanning memory.
